Roaming because they were born free…
Not really, I don’t think there are wild camels, or I should say dromedaries, left in the desert. Maybe in some very remote areas of the Empty Quarter in Saudi Arabia, but definitively not here in the UAE or even in Oman. As a matter of fact, most of the camels you see around here are not even a local breed. They have been imported from Somalia or Sudan. The local camel has much darker hair, is more bulky, and as a result of imports, is now quite rare. Nevertheless, dawn is the best time to see them, as they leave the farm to go roam for wild food. They will return “home” before sunset. The ones you meet are all females, sometimes with their pups. The males are kept to a minimal. For one they can be aggressive, but the real reason being, they don’t give milk therefor don’t have much commercial value.
I admire that animal. Its ability to survive this harsh environment. Observing them taught me how to stay “slow” in any situation. Being calm helps staying cool. One step at a time, beating the heat.
