The various vehicle friendly trails you may drive on through are just a very very small percentage of the communication network of the mountains. Still today, many inhabitants, go from A to B on foot, carrying their belongings or food on the back of donkeys. For them, modernity has yet to disturb their lives irreversibly. It’s hard, it’s precarious, but most refuse to trade up their simple ways for what we call comfort. Deep down I think they are probably right ! Should I return my car to its garage, and like Stevenson trough the french Cévennes explore this land by “fair means” ? Me and a donkey. At this very moment I’m strongly thinking about it !
